Sonnet for Black Lives Matter
We’ve come too far in this day and time
To live with daily strife,
But every time I turn around
There’s a loss of another black life.
That in itself “ain’t” nothing new
Except that the shooters are wearing blue,
The blue that says “serve and protect”
But what you gonna do when the target is you?
Tension is rising, there is anger and rage
No answers ease the pain,
A black boy’s life suddenly comes to an end
Is enough to drive everyone insane.
But when’s it gonna stop when in the news
Shootings get all the press,
Black boys dying before their time
Is happening much more than less.
It keeps blowing my mind in this day and time
Are we witnessing slow genocide,
Taking the lives of young black boys
Before they ever get to learn black pride.
Doesn’t matter if they’re caught in a crime or not
With the evidence all around,
The end results are still the same
Another black boy in the ground.
We keep crying out, keep giving a shout
Hoping those who serve and protect,
Will turn on their own and get the bad seeds
Still hiding among them yet.
Until that day I don’t see any peace
No justice is in the news,
How can you say “cops ain’t all bad”
When the killers still dress in blue.
So I pray dear Lord for the killing to cease
That’s fed by fear and hate,
For when the end comes You will be judge
And for many it will be too late.
