Olean
Living by double standard rules
under a rooftop of hate
trying to remain passive
by taking numerous deep breaths
While they dream of his death
Another quiet day,
alienated and queer
outside the neighbors peer
from behind lacy curtained windows
mocking, judgmental eyes
Leaving the yard this time
walking up the hill
past a veterans cemetery
while the city council
dreams of another landfill
The horseflies bite
tangling in his hair
yellow jackets swarm
patrolling territories beware
Surrounded by these foothills
ascending into mountains
supposedly a body was buried
a dead brother,
the other got away with it apparently
He never confessed to it
never quite caught
how does he live with himself,
lost in memories so distraught?
Welcome to the Downtown area
not much happens here
except one fall day
a brown bear wandered down Main Street
causing minor hysteria
The blandness of ordinariness
is strangling me
might as well step in front
of a moving car
and embrace the face of misery
