Bird watcher
Long ago, but not so far away
You could search and never find a bluebird.
Then people started making houses for them to stay.
And they returned.
Any hawk flying was a target to shoot down.
For grandma’s egg-money bought feed sacks
To make colorful and cool cotton gowns.
But we found not all were chicken hawks!
And they returned.
The fish in the lakes were tainted
So that eggs broke under tender care.
DDT was removed from use
And we saw the eagles fair.
Still I search for a woodpecker
With an ivory, not yellow bill.
I have not seen him yet
But when I do
It will be a thrill!
