Sunrise
From the east, a shaft of light.
Slowly, the warm yellow sun
moves from the grey horizon.
That first light paints the treetops
Where cardinals proclaim “home”.
Then on the field and valley
Where meadowlarks sing their praise.
Oh sun, if thou art not god,
We pray to the God that made thee.
Avoid the demon. Aapep,
who is the dark part of light;
and renew life to our world.
Travel forth and create time.
Man needs a well-lighted stage.
Let the precious play begin
Again
