Forbidden City
South gate
Steps lead upward
To gates of social class,
opening to hollow courtyards
sterile in ancient manhood.
Painted yellow roof tiles
Now aged to warmer gold
Atop painted wood beauty.
The wind in the courtyard
Plays with planetree cotton.
Masses of flagged groups
Overflow northward
To a tree flanked gate!
Ancient female spirits
Breath life into hidden
Gardens.
Northward
To face the demons again
-to depart and to face
coal hill.
