Looking Down (free verse)
As the doors of the church swings open the chill grips my feetMy body has become numb as my lips turn blue
The hairs on my body stand erect as the smell of incense comes rushing
My black overcoat sways in the wind as I enter the doors
Everyone is already seated with their heads burried in their hands
I have no idea why everyone is so sad
In the front sits a cherry oak casket opend with flowers placed upon it
Again the wind begins to whip around me
Slowly I make my way down the aisle to the front
For some reason no one see's me walking
They all still mourning with face's engulped in their palms
Suddenly the preacher rises and starts reading psalms
"for the waters have come over my head"
Just then a shiver jotls down my spine
Is this my funeral is this why I'm not seen
I look down and I see blood dripping from my body
This cannot be good I think to myself
Scared to death I must find out who is in that casket
I reach the casket to find a man with no face
Surely this must be some mistake a man with no face
The only clue is a picture of a baby grasped within his hands
Just then my blood turned to tears
Knowing this is me I drop to my knees and pray
That this all is just a dream and for myself to wake from this nightmare
I slowly turn around to see the faces of the mourners
I turn pale white
These people are friends, family, and people I don't know
Here to pay their respects to a man who is standing before them
I can't be dead I'm hear and can see everything
Suddenly I only see a white flash
There is nothingness surrounding me
Yet I still hear all the cries
My coat has now shed revealing my wings
Numbness has now dissapated and is replaced with peace
I'm looking down now on my family I had no choice to leave behind
Crying eyes for the pain I feel in leaving to soon
For now it begins to rain
My casket now loaded in the hurse
Rain drops pelting the onlookers hitting the ground with thier sorrow
Everyone standing around as they place me above my resting place
A warm hand touches my casket as thier heads fall and weap
I can't see this childs face but it makes me cry harder
The rain has now began to flood to earth
Hand and hand they walk away to let me rest
For I know you did your best I heard
Now I know I'm surely gone
I can only look down and watch over you my son
My words now only whisper in the wind and through the trees
Sometimes I pray they hear my words on the breeze
To know that I'm in heaven and always looking down!
