I Want to Know You
Where are you from? What do you do?
Would you fear me if I said, “I want to know you”?
Because you are different, some things are new.
Give me a hint or maybe a clue.
Are you Scottish like the poet Robert Burns?
Or African American like the poet Langston Hughes, in school everyone learned?
Maybe you are from Jamaica, like the songwriter Bob Marely.
If I ever judged you before I knew you, I am so sorry.
Your history makes up my history and your diversity helps me understand too.
Would you fear me if I said, again, “I want to know you”?
Give me a chance to understand what the Stonewall Riots could be.
Tell me about Nigeria gaining Independence in 1960.
Why is the 4th of July important to people in the Philippines?
Can you tell me what Sukkoth for Jewish descents means?
To know you better, is to know how to work with many.
So to me, you opinion is worth way more than just a penny.
Because you are who you are, you help me do what I do.
Your diversity is the key so I want to know you.
Would you fear me if I said, “I want to know you”?
Because you are different, some things are new.
Give me a hint or maybe a clue.
Are you Scottish like the poet Robert Burns?
