The Return

The Return

Nests of the birds
Built in springtime
Blown away
From winters winds

Wait for another season
 to begin
Wait and wonder
Which ones will return

Likened to a love
That floats with the breeze
Never knowing
Which way it will turn

The butterflies dependable
Never wonder where
They will be
Return to the spots
They have always been

California
San Juan Capistrano
The swallows
They return, rest their wings
The history of their story
Forever sings

We aren’t forever in winter
We always look forward to spring
Looking for love to come
Return once again

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
