A Friend
You may meet someone new as they are passing by
A smile and hello and you go on with the day
Not a second thought given as to who and/or why
A stranger that passed and continued on their way
You see them a second time, maybe same place
Again a smile and hello is all that you can find
But this time a glint of recognition crosses their face
They look into your eyes and respond in kind
Your paths cross a number of times through the weeks
Always you exchange a smile and hello
Your smiles more genuine each time they speak
Not quite as forced as ever onward you go
Then one day their smile is barely there
You pause and ask "How are you today?"
Now they stop and take time to share
Just a few words and then off on their way
Next time you meet they ask how you are
And little by little you learn more and more
You still walk on by but not quite as fast or far
You will see them again of that you are sure
The months go by and turn into years
You find yourself hoping these meets never end
This stranger now shares your smiles and fears
And you realize they have become your friend
How did it happen and exactly when
There is no way of knowing the day or the hour
You just spent some time again and again
And slowly the budding friendship flowered
So dont pass by a stanger without a smile on your face
Each and every person you meet is a potential friend
They show up at odd times and in the most unlikely place
Just be friendly and you will attract one in the end
