Time

You are all powerful nobody can deny
You are everlasting yet you're never constant
Everyone waits on you your move is our command
You're ageless as the world your mark comes only once.

History goes with you and all those world leaders
You gave them parts of you each one played his own game
Some of them did great deeds others made the world dim
There were contributions there were also ruins.

People gave you numbers just for identity
Still you keep counting you're out of quantity
The lifespan of all things won't last eternally
Everyone comes and goes but you're forever be.

The earth turns the same way nights and days have no end
You just play your cycle and pass unabated
You never seem to pause nor you seem affected
By people's constant cries, sickness or even deaths.

We see you as abstract because you have no form
Yet you're part of our lives our existence norm
You measure our age record when we were born
You also mark our end, is it later or soon?

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
