    Sober

If I was to drink the happy feeling would only be temporary.
Living here sober is hard, rough and sometimes scary.
If I was a drinker I would only see through glassy eyes.
Living here sober I can make mistakes, fix them and I don't have to wear a phony disguise.
If I was a drinker I wouldn't be sure of my emotions or anything.
Living here sober keeps me alert and makes me aware of things.
If I was to drink I wouldn't know how to re-trace my steps and be better from any mistakes!
Living here sober, sadly I hold my head down and am made fun of because of some of the risks I will and won't take.
If I was a drinker, if and when people compared me to her it wouldn't be so hard!
Living here sober, name-calling bothers me, makes me think a lot, doubt me and leave tiny scars,
If I was a drinker playing with danger wouldn't even matter.
Living here sober my mind is jumbled, coasting, and at times very scattered.
If I was a drinker, living in the clouds would mean life would be all smiles and plenty of space to run wild.
Living here sober, I'm forced to learn what its like to grow into a young woman instead of spending life as a child.
If I was a drinker I would only be looking for fun and trying to get in where I fit in.
Living here sober makes you think twice, it helps and teaches you to be more comfortable in your own skin.
If I was a drinker acting like an ass really wouldn't faze me!
Living here sober helps me to be more cautious about being free.
If I was a drinker I probably wouldn't have any cares in the world.
Living here sober lets me know that I can be and I am more than an average girl.
If I was a drinker it wouldn't be a thing to get involved in silly or stupid fights.
But, living here sober I'm learning that it's best to do things sober and right!

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
