    Thoughts In Retrospect

    You will always be
the light by which I see.
    You will always be
    the driving force within me.

    You will always be
the sunshine that brightens my day
    You will always be
the love that guides my way.

    You will always be
found in every star up in the sky
    You will always be
found in that small twinkle within my eye

    Looking at you,
    on these glossy pages
I see you running, laughing, playing
    Though the picture is still.

    I hear your sweet voice
as you smile and say "cheese"
    Though the picture is silent.

I feel you take my hand
as we walk through the yard
Though the picture is one dimension.

    I smell the sweet fragrance
of the flower you picked from the garden and placed behind my ear
Though the ink is the only scent hoovering.

I watch you throw a ball to me
    saying "Momma, Catch!"
    I kiss your scraped knee
After you trip on the sidewalk.

    I dry your tears
after you have a bad dream.
I tuck you back in bed
And I sing you off to sleep.

    I can still feel
your baby soft skin as you suckled upon my breast
    A time when we
were free to live; those years considered best

    My photographs and memories
are all that I have to hold.
    Failed dreams and broken promises
    Stories left untold.

    Your photos continue
to reside on my walls; can't take them down yet
I don't want to let go
of any of my memories; don't want to forget.

    I want to hang on
to the memories I have left; not ready to pack them away.
    The pain is so bad
I just want to die; and it only gets worse everyday.

    Missing you is like
a double edged sword that slices right through my heart
    Loving you is like
an eternal flame that can't be extinguished however far we are apart.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
