    Poem Commentary

This was one of the poems that I wrote a few years ago!

    Across the midnight sky

    A gentle soothing breeze

The wind lets out a settled sigh

    The candles as they please

And all around the salty water

Foam crawling up the jagged cliff

Again, the whole world seemed to falter

Wondering why, or who or if

But yet the gleaming, sad misfortune

    That overlapped the shining sea

And the sun setting, burning yellow

The silent sob echoed through the key

And rang around the world a warning cry

That left all ones to mourn

The soft currents turned to angry tides

And the lives were left forlorn

The breezes turned to strong winds

And every silence turned to sigh

Across the meadow full of sins

Was let loose and set to fly

So, to run across the battlefield

    Stained and drowned in tears

And to sit, to cry and weep

    A prayer loses fears

No screams were echoed later that time

Not on that dark and lonely night

All was well, and they saw light

    Across the darkened midnight sky

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
