Suicide Cows

Suicide Cows

The happy little bovine

wears a crooked, little grin

To tell her little story

I'm not sure where to begin

Do I tell of Old McDonald

on his happy little farm?

How he loves the animals

and keeps them free from harm?

How about the little Dairy

on the California coast?

The cows sing in commercials

'cause they like it there the most.

Their milk is so much better

all they want to do is please

Want to thrill your taste buds?

You should try their cheddar cheese!

Its a marvelous delusion

propaganda, fantasy

The real telling of the story

includes pain and misery

Old McDonald has a farm

more like a prison block

And on his farm he has some cows

that work around the clock

No grazing in the pastures

they are locked inside of stalls

The feed is full of steroids

and they die behind those walls

No singing in commercials

just a soft lowing lament

And our communal deafness

is what greed often foments

In our lust for cooking flesh

we ignore the inhumane

Convinced by the singing cows

are we really that insane?

Is the little bovine happy?

That is for you to decide

Through denial we engage

In our own slow suicide

Hardhitting and cleverly led into. Your voice is strong and resilent. Excellent work! A definite flip side of the marketing coin. Thanks.

Whew! Glad I've already made the vegetarian decision. When a child, we took our daughter to a rendering plant for a field trip. She also is a committed vegetarian. Loves ice cream though!

Thanks. I guess have to blame or thank my wife. It mostly depends if I'm craving a juicy steak or not...LOL

Started humorous and then the grit came through. Great job..........................................

wow - this is certainly well done - and so true. I absolutely love how you contrasted the commercial image of the beef industry to the cold truth of it. Your rhythm and rhyme scheme added to it's easy beat...Thanks for a great poem.

Thanks Beagle! The idea for this poem came about from a conversation I had with some artist friends about the goulash we were about to have for dinner. We joked about how animals gave themselves willingly for our enjoyment and the title 'Suicide Cows' popped in my head and I said this would make a good poem. I have since begun to eat a mainly vegetarian diet. Didn't anticipate that outcome... LOL

To have great poets there must be great audiences too.
