STEPS

STEPS

SOME STEPS ARE MERE STEPPING STONES

SOME STEPS ARE ASCENDING AND DESCENDING

SOME STEPS ARE A NECESSARY EVIL

EVERYDAY THERE ARE STEPS TO TAKE SERIOUS

SO WHAT STEPS ARE YOU TAKING TODAY

ARE THEY BABY STEPS

ARE THEY LONG DISTANCE STEPS

OR MAYBE SOME WONDERFUL DANCING STEPS

NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE

NO MATTER WHERE YOU GO

NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO

NO MATTER WHAT YOU SAY

AND NO MATTER WHAT YOU THINK

THERE WILL BE STEPS EVERYDAY

AND EVERYTHING HAS ITS FIRST STEP OR STEPS

EVEN IF IT MAY SEEM LIKE AN ILLUSION

THOSE STEPS MUST BE TAKEN

THESE STEPS COME AGAIN, AGAIN, AND AGAIN

BECAUSE LIFES STEPS ARE ONLY THE BEGINING

HOW MANY STEPS CLOSER TO YOUR DREAMS ARE YOU

WHAT STEPS ARE YOU TAKING THAT ARE NEW

YET EVERYTHING HAS SO MANY STEPS

STEPS FOR STEPPING UP

STEPS FOR STEPPING DOWN

STEPS IN MANY SHAPES

STEPS IN MANY FASHIONS

OUR FIRST AND LAST STEPS IN LIFE, SO BEAUTIFUL

SO TELL ME WHAT STEPS ARE YOU TAKING

THERE IS A COLORFUL WAY OF SEEING STEPS

THERE IS MUSIC IN STEPS AND STEPS IN MUSIC

STEPS HAVE A DEGREE, GRADE, OR RANK

AS YOU SEE ALL STEPS CONTINUALLY CHANGE

I HAVE TAKEN MANY STEPS

AND I WILL TAKE MANY MORE

STEPS ARE WHAT MAKES THIS ONE WORLD

IF EVERYONE JUST TOOK ONE GOOD STEP

OUR WORLD WOULD BEGIN TO JUST GET ALONG WITH EACH OTHER

IMAGINE TWO OR THREE MAYBE EVEN FOUR FORWARD STEPS

THESE STEPS MAY JUST SAVE OUR LIVES

thank you for taking the time to read my poem

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
