End of the Game
There you are
Sitting on the side of the street
Watching the other kids play
Hockey on the black road.
The sun beats down,
And the street breathes hot asphalt breath
Still they play on
Moving only for the occasional car
There you are
Sitting on the sidewalk
Wearing second hand thrift store clothes
And slightly bent glasses with tape on the nose
Staring intensely at the game in progress
Children hitting the substitute puck
The clatter of sticks, the sound of roller-skates
Grunting, and groaning, the cheers for a goal
There you are
Watching the sweat cascade off the young athletes
As the day grows pregnant with heat
You sit there on the sidewalk
Scraped knees and tattered tennis shoes
Eyeglasses and pig tailed braids
Watching from the sidewalk
As the day's heat grows in intensity
There you are
Screaming as the boy goes flying
Over the windshield
Across the roof
Cries from everywhere
The breaking of glass
The screeching of brakes
The blood of another child
Lands on your face
The end of the game
Sitting on the side of the street
Watching the other kids play
Hockey on the black road.
The sun beats down,
And the street breathes hot asphalt breath
Still they play on
Moving only for the occasional car
There you are
Sitting on the sidewalk
Wearing second hand thrift store clothes
And slightly bent glasses with tape on the nose
Staring intensely at the game in progress
Children hitting the substitute puck
The clatter of sticks, the sound of roller-skates
Grunting, and groaning, the cheers for a goal
There you are
Watching the sweat cascade off the young athletes
As the day grows pregnant with heat
You sit there on the sidewalk
Scraped knees and tattered tennis shoes
Eyeglasses and pig tailed braids
Watching from the sidewalk
As the day's heat grows in intensity
There you are
Screaming as the boy goes flying
Over the windshield
Across the roof
Cries from everywhere
The breaking of glass
The screeching of brakes
The blood of another child
Lands on your face
The end of the game
