Drowning
I woke up with my toes covered in water.
It's strange but not alarming.
A little annoyed, I get ready for the day.
It is just a little water.
I can handle this.
I opened the front door; the flood rushed in.
Waist deep in the icy water, I shiver.
I had no idea it was there.
Nothing to worry about, it's just a little water.
I can handle this.
I passed through my front gate.
The ground slopes; my head is barely above the water.
I start to worry. This can't be good.
Drawing on my own strength I keep moving.
I can handle this.
I continue on tiptoes, but the ground disappears.
I struggle, but I'm sinking fast.
Frightened, I'm fighting, but losing.
My hope is starting to fade.
I can handle this.
I can't see the surface.
I am weak from the struggle.
I am not sure if I can fight anymore.
Not living, not dying, slowly drowning from my troubles.
I can't handle this.
