Destiny

You drifted,

Towards the easy way out

Pretending you knew

What life was all about.

You turned

Away from destiny

To scared to face

How your life would be.

You trusted

What you thought you saw

And played the games.

In spite of that one flaw,

You hide

Beneath your wings of fire

Shielded from the ice

That would cool your desire.

You wait,

In hopes that you survive

And grasp at straws

To keep your dreams alive

You cry,

Though you knew all along

This kind of love

Has always been wrong.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
