    Daughter I remember

    Daughter I remember,

The sparkle of your smile that lit up my world

The warmth from your tiny hand as you wrapped it around my finger

The feel of your heartbeat as you fell asleep on my chest

    Daughter I remember,

The first time you said "daddy" and I felt my heart melt

The first time you skinned your knee and I felt my heart break

The first day of school and how you grew

    Daughter I remember,

The way you placed me on a pedestal and revered me

The way you loved being daddy’s little girl and all the curls

The way you danced on stage and played baseball

The way you descended the aisle on graduation day and how proud I was

    Daughter I remember,

leaving, And how it was the hardest thing I ever had to do

And how I didn’t mean to hurt you but unknowingly did

And how without your love, happiness couldn’t find me and guilt swept over me

    Daughter I remember,

Trying to shield you from the pain of divorce and not being able to

Aching to be your dad and revenge not allowing me that pleasure

Watching you slip away, grow apart and wondering why

Attempting to right the wrong that made your love wither

    Daughter I remember,

    Being hurt and reacting badly

Saying things in frustration I shouldn’t have

Wondering if that’s what made you turn from me?

Wanting to say I was sorry and foolish pride holding back the words

    Daughter I remember,

Wishing I could heal all the hurt and anger between us

Yearning for you to come back into my life

Feeling a void where you use to be

    Daughter remember

    You’re loved, missed, and needed

You’re always in my heart, and forever in my thoughts

You’re still my family, and I am here for you if need be

    Daughter remember

You are almost a woman, as you turn sixteen

But still my princess, as you blossom into a queen

You’re a very special lady, so don’t be afraid to dream

Be sure you are treated with respect, and esteem

Be true to your heart, and you will always be free

Be confident in life’s journeys, and forever you will succeed

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

    Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
