A Life of a Single Mom
I am trapped in a world full of responsibilities
But every day of my life, I believe in the possibilities
That I can, on my own, support all of my children’s needs.
No one has ever asked me about my life;
Nor someone dared to know that I was once a loving wife
To a man who left me with nothing but strife.
I fell in love with him when I was nineteen.
I was smart, pretty and very lean.
And him? He treated me like a queen.
My mother kept on telling me not to be blinded by love
And father always told me: “More sense you should have.”
But their words were nothing to a woman in love.
I got pregnant three months after I turned twenty.
There was no other choice but abide by the holy matrimony;
Not knowing that four years later my child would lose her daddy.
We have fought almost every day until we declared we’re over.
My poor daughter and I, to him, did not really matter.
So he left both of us alone and soon found another.
Weeks after we separated our ways I found out;
The doctor told me I was two months pregnant.
I’ve asked myself many times if I should tell him or not.
He was already happy and now has a new family of his own;
And I realized that the three of us were truly abandoned.
But I promised myself that my children would never be alone.
I have to work hard for the sake of my family.
I will never let my children ever go hungry.
Though it’s difficult to raise them on my own, I have to embrace this duty.
There was no one to turn to but myself.
That irresponsible man did not even bother to help.
But I was not discouraged and not even once wept.
I wanted to go back to school and earn a degree
But it was difficult because I am the bread winner of the family
So I have to work double jobs to feed the mouths of three.
No one has ever asked me how I was feeling today
But I don’t mind at all because I’m feeling okay.
This is the start of my story; Faith is my name by the way.
