In The Sunrise of Her Eyes

In The Sunrise of Her Eyes

Fill this emptiness inside my chest

Loosen this iron knot of Fate

The voice of living waters will never cease

This anguish presses soon nor late

I’ll recede into her warm embrace

Disappear into the depth of her eyes

    These feelings I can’t erase

Please free me from grey mocking skies,

For I am paused in a journey

Seems an eternity between two breaths

    I search for the answers

That may haunt me till my death

Like a whisper in a melody of silence

As graceful as the morning mist

In a dream of dew washed mornings

Why must love come with such a twist

Now, the present fades to blue

Every moment passes to the past

    Lost horizons rise on through

Tears of desire hang on to the last

    Time…we didn’t have

Slipped away like night toward day

    A certainty of loss

    I just get swept away

I tasted the salt of tears

    Drowned in love’s debris

I have lived through the fears

    I just didn’t foresee

    How the sun also set

In the depth of her eyes

Now I weep in the darkness

    Filled with unending sighs

I have stared through the dark

    Till my soul was blind

    The voice of night

    Still plays through my mind

    Echo’s voice is forlorn

    In dreams soothsay

    My heart, anguished torn

    Can’t live another day

    Let death be my release

If love can be a curse

When the whisper of her voice

Is only an echo of the worst

It was a fate I could not avoid

I could feel it, taste it like the rain

    I embraced it for awhile

    Now only memories remain

    My sorrows are too dark

    For day to know

    Time’s un-hasting stride

    Won’t let her go

    So I hide deep inside

    A wall of denial

    The memories, the pain

    Will linger for awhile

    Through the soft silence

    Of listening night

    I’m set free to wait

    I long for her sight

    For I know for me

    The sun will only rise

    When I wake…

In the sunrise of her eyes

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
