    Poem Commentary

    I Can't Go Home

    The happy hearts these walls contain,
    Don't mix well with my somber soul.
    Amongst the crowd I can not stay.

    But I can't go home
    No, I can't go home.

    If I stomach one more smiley face,
    I might vomit the hunger I can't control.
    Though my eyes may twitch, my limbs may shake,

    I can't go home;
    No, I can't go home.

    My tears won't disturb the peace, I pray,
    I hope they can't see the pain I hold.
    If I beg or I shout or I plead I'm afraid

    They may send me home;
    But I can't go home.

    The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

    Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
