    Poem Commentary

    Written September 9, 2007

    Augusta

I would raise your body from the grave.
    If I could,
I would mold your ashes into flesh.
The energy released would be worth –
    Just one more day,
    One more moment.

    To Charleston we went,
    And we saw the sea.
Down old dirt roads, some stone streets.
If you had flown I would have
    Prayed for wings, a lift
    Into the heavenly skies.

Although you cried for Eastern Georgia,
    Somewhere deep in Richmond County,
Down the way of interstate 20,
    Somewhere east of 85,
    I shamefully refused your hand.

Cry once more and I will heed your scream.
Drive and I will ride with you.
I will run farther than my legs can carry.
Hold my number in your memory.
    When you visualize Augusta’s sky,
This time I will fight for the front seat.

Love lost love - you have a future, take it!

Poetry is either something that lives like fire inside you or else it is nothing, an empty formalized bore around which pedants can endlessly drone their notes and explanations.
