Darlin'

Darlin', you can hurt my feelings,
Then send me crying off to sleep.
Darlin', you can turn my nerves into a mess.
If you take the heart I give you
And light it with a match,
I will forgive you even after nothing's left.

But, Darlin', you can't fix my broken heart
With needles and a kiss, and Darlin',
You can't grant a shiny pair of wings.
Either send me straight to hell
Or treat me better than a queen
But, Darlin', both would give you power over me.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
