When we held hands
Summertime, 1996,
I was 15, one below 1 six,
This moment is a culmination of what I felt, what she felt, what we felt then and there,
The joining of two as one, hearts culminated into a higher lair,
Granted, in the grand scheme of things I was simply the nice guy hearing her fall from glory,
Body language however, tells another story,
I played the part of listener to perfection, empathy well in hand,
That day I was rewarded in a way I have yet to understand,
She rambled on and on about her present boyfriend, he soon became her ex,
With better skill and understanding of women, it wouldnt surprise me if wed had sex,
No, no maybe not, I was very religious then,
Too much pressure to deal with from within,
So there she talked as we walked,
Side by side and then it just kinda happened,
We held hands, like magnets pulled together or two marshmellows burned side by side, fattened,
The height of my romance, so to speak,
Those 4 minutes, felt like a week,
Slow motion, slow movment, all that was needed was tounge and cheek,
I swear to god I wanted to kiss her, in mid sentence and with my lips say, "HERE is what your heart should have, can have, deserves to have, deserves to be,
Put your sorrows and tears down and lay your comfort in me,
I played good guy, but wanted to become the savior,
Capture her from what I thought was evil, bad behavior,
Caress her hair and feel the softness of her skin,
Make the pain she was feeling turn into joy from within,
Hold her in my arms, tell her it would be ok,
Make out with her I suppose, be content of my victory that day,
Smile and see her smile right back,
But thats not what happened, ahh youve hit earth, welcome back Jack.
I eventually walked her to her dorm, and made an about face,
Happy I held hands, but dismayed that I had no grace,
To be the hero I should have become,
To which then I would have a welcome,
Chance at being her partner, her clyde, her teenage boy becoming a man,
But thats the best I could do, I did what I can.
