The Canvas

I contemplate my brush
its ever so gentle stroke
steady as my hands stay
I want to paint me a getaway
I paint a sunset sky
with a sweet summer breeze
It sets off my heart of memories
Sweet memories no one else can see

I cry into the colors
they run down and onto the floor
My heart sinks heavy
I know I'll make those memories no more

If I could only paint your memory
If I could only paint your sound
If I could only paint your presence
My world would once again spin 'round

Gray becomes the palette
As the rain comes pouring in
all the colors faded
I start to paint again

I paint the softest blues
the gentlest of greens
I try to paint your touch
but I can't reawaken that dream

A softer rain it pours
Like a soothing lullaby
I pull my brush away
and I just wonder... why?

If I could only paint that day
the one you said you'd stay
I replay it over and over

I wash the canvas over.
