Pearls and Diamonds
At first, all I could do was cry.
At first, all I wanted to do was die.
At first, all I could do was stare into space.
All I could do was wish for a hand to wipe the tears from my face.
I lived a life of sadness and loneliness.
I didn't know where to turn back then.
I thought everyday was just a vast hopelessness.
I looked in cold eyes at the sight of men.
I didn't want anyone to love me.
I just wanted to be alone.
I didn't see that there were people around me
That were willing to take me home.
All my life people have looked to me
As though I were the luckiest girl.
But in truth I was a speck of sand
Surrounded by beautiful pearls.
It wasn't until I looked at them
For what they really were
That I saw they weren't perfect either
And they were hiding under the surface as well.
Those people who covered me, took me for what I am
Sheltered me from the wind outside
And I never felt cold again.
I was lost, but then they found me.
Their love and hope wrapped around me.
They let my heart know that I was really free
And I didn't live a life of tragedy.
We're all coal at first birth
We're all dark and our hearts are black.
It just depends on how you live your life
That determines where your diamond's at.
You don't have to put on an image for others.
Because they're just the same as you.
They all start out rough
Then one day the shine finally breaks through.
We're all diamonds in the coal
We're all sand before we're pearls.
At first, all I wanted to do was die.
At first, all I could do was stare into space.
All I could do was wish for a hand to wipe the tears from my face.
I lived a life of sadness and loneliness.
