Poem Commentary

Michael Brent Soliz, fourteen, died 10/13/09 (my 16th bday btw) in a Forth Worth hospital from various illnesses: swine flu, pneumonia, several surgeries, internal bleeding, and other sicknesses he's struggled with over the years. He had a good life here in small Rotan, TX, and he treated as well as was treated by other people with respect and friendship. I didn't know him personally, but I saw him day to day and found that he was a big guy, but a "teddy bear" as some say. He had pretty blue eyes and he had the brightest smile I've ever seen. He battled swine flu etc. for three weeks until they finally took him off of life support because his organs were shutting down regardless. The whole town is deeply saddened by his loss and will remember him forever. RIP Michael Soliz '95-'09.

Angel

I know an angel
That returned to Heaven
His worldy life came to an end
He had blue eyes that sparkled in the light
He had a smile that the stars envied every night
He had a fearless personality
But at the same time he was very friendly
Even though I didn't know him personally
I knew many people cared for him
I knew he had many friends
He was only a kid, but he was a great one
A true angel on earth he was
But sadly, even angels must go
Back to Heaven, we all know
Many people got the privilege to befriend him
And with his leaving so my people were saddened
We must understand that death is apart of life
Even children must go through hard times
Though here he suffered good and long
Now he's free and hurting not
He loved his family, his friends, and God
But as the cycle continues, he had to go on
Leaving us all behind
Gone to live in heavenly light
I know an angel
That returned to Heaven
There his life has no end

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
