    Poem Commentary

    Shorter than normal

    night city lights

    Nights City lights

I wonder as they rush by,

can they feel the watchful eye?

Keeping track of where they were,

writing all that cant be heard.

Lights guide them through the night ,

I am still shadowed by the light.

This City of Night holds me stranded

    nowhere alone forever Branded

    Lost time that can’t return

Bridges crossed too wet to burn.

    Screams of passion fall unheard

Years go by yet still no word.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
