I was told
I Was Toldthat I would never rise
that I would fail and die
before the ashes of my life enables me to fly
I was told
that my journey in life would unfold
the ancient curse
biblically foretold and worse
that I was atrocious
faceless and worthless
an animal that's soulless
hu-man-ity broken
her-story stolen
beholdin', I've been told
everything unworthy I was
I was cryin'
every tear drop
that fell from my eyes
gave me a pride aesthetic
beautiful and pregnant with life
Though I wonder
what I was told
how it enabled one man to enslave my soul
I was cryin' as the Truth
began to unfold
that sex, love and dope
were the slave masters hope
Away from my true nature
a princess at best if not a Queen
a Ghanaian Griot or
future hope of my people
I was told
I was the soul
I was the consciousness
of the trees that had to grow
the Bee that built a hive for the Queen
the Ants that worked in Unison
diggin' holes as strong as an Oak
I was told
that if I would cry God would listen
but I didn't know
cause I wasn't aware how omnipotent I was
I was in existence, that I know,
now I could never bow to an external image !
