Don't Pray For Me

Poem Commentary

I'm not joking. Every time someone says "I'll pray for you" or "God bless you" it makes me mad. I DON'T want a prayer! I don't want someone to do such stupidities.

Don't Pray For Me

If you have a prayer
That you want to share
Don't give it to me
Or i'll throw it away

Don't pray for me
I do not care
For such stupidity

My heart is broke
My skull is open
Yet i am fine
Without your concern

If you pray for me
You will see
That I will be hurt
And in pain till the end

Don't pray for me
Don't cheer me up
I don't want you near
When I turn to go

Leave me with nothing
So I can be happy

I do not want
Your prays
Or even a song

Leave me be
Without a prayer

I don't want you to pray
For someone like me

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
