Calm Passed

Calm Passed

Calm passed,
he paced silently up and down,
he stopped and looked around,
spirits falling down,
his eyes flashed,
his thoughts were trashed,
his emotions crashed,
his time passed,
then he fell to the floor,
bleeding some more,
his glance was dry,
lips trembled,
he held back his cry,
suddenly he fell way down,
Hell opened the ground,
he saw the fires that burn,
he failed to learn,
his heart had no thump nor pound,
it lost its beat,
as the flames carried the heat,
his own ghost drew back in horror,
he muttered, and turned pale,
he tried begging, that failed,
he called God’s name,
there was no reply,
the shadows of hell absorbed his soul,
and he no longer held back the cry.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
