    Poem Commentary

This poem is about the ever present threat of homelessness that plagues many americans, not just the mentally ill, or those suffering from addiction. I myself will be counted amongst the ever growing number of men, women and children with no place to call home on the 31st of this month of July. And I don't mind telling you all that I am simply terrified. Count your blessings

    As I Pass You By

    I've narrowly escaped you.
    This time...
Still the ground beneath my feet
    has yet to discover
    the catalyst it requires,
to make it solid enough to say,
I've escaped the possibility of you
    forever.

Too many, who have found you
    to be their tragic destiny,
have foolishly laughed off the possibility
that they too might find themselves
laying their weary and bewildered heads
upon your cold and unforgiving frame at night,
with newspaper stories meaning little more to them
than a fleeting chance at warmth.

    As I pass you by,
I feel none of the nostalgia,
or melancholy thoughts of times gone by
but instead my heart skips a beat
and I am slick with the cold sweat of terror,
for my future is so unsure and unsteady,
    as to make me afraid
    of a park bench

I really appreciate your kind words and enthusiasm, I would have replied sooner but I had no idea they had changed the site and gave us the ability to do so until just now! Thank you once again.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
