The Prince

  • Well, here goes nothing. Really. I'm not doing anything.

The Prince

There's a lot of things I've seen in my life.
I've seen castles.
I've seen gardens.
I've seen kings.
I've seen queens.
But you know what I haven't seen?
I haven't seen budding orchids.
I haven't seen freshly raked leaves.
I haven't seen children running down the street after the ice cream man.
I haven't seen life.
What's life?
Is it the finest things?
Evidently not, and I'm living proof of that.
Is it the highest amount of things?
Well, it can't be that either.
So what is it?
It's what you do with the things you have.
Why do you care?
Why should you listen to me?
Because I've thrown my life away.
Being prince.
Showing off.
Trying to have the most of the best.
But you know what?
I don't want any of it anymore.
Let me sit on a wooden porch in a marsh, listening to crickets and a banjo.
Let me lie on a grassy field staring at the wooly white clouds in the blue sky.
Let me climb a rocky mountain and watch the sun rise over the horizon.
Let me run through a snow covered field and gaze back at my footsteps.
That's what I want.
Not a throne.
Not a crown.
Not a kingdom.
I want my life back.
But I can't have it back.
I can dream.
I can dream about flying through the air.
I can dream about exploring the world.
I can dream about catching a lady bug on my finger.
I can dream about doing a headstand and counting to five.
But I can't do any of it.
Not any longer.
So go ahead.
If you're worried about what other people think, just remember me.
And then you can do what I couldn't.
You can ride a horse across a green field, watching the flowers and trees.
You can trek through a snowy trail, and discover a town with great cocoa.
You can take a long road trip, and take a picture everywhere you stop.
You can paint a picture of a pink flower growing in a meadow.
You can tell someone you love them.
You can tell someone Jesus loves them.
You can find out that Jesus loves you.
Do it for me.
Do it for you.
Do it for God.

If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry.
