    On the riverbank...

I was sitting on the riverbank
    watching the water flow
    when leaves began appearing
and I thought of people I know.

The leaves would gather now and then
where the current would take a turn
and then, one by one the leaves would move.
Their travels were of no big concern.

They would stop and visit for awhile
    with others along their way.
Then journey forth, alone or in pairs
as I watched on that autumn day.

It is in Life the same, I think.
As people in our lives come and go.
It's a river, we are leaves floating along
and enjoying the places where the water flows.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
