    Florida's Winter

    The dead leaves cover the forest walk,
    and withered are the pale wild flowers;
    the frost hangs blackening on the stalk,
    the dewdrops fall in frozen showers.
    I heard a clear and wildwood note,
    that rose and swelled from yonder tree
    a gay bird with too sweet a throat,
    there perched and raised her song for me.
    The winter comes and where is she?
    Away, where summer wings will rove,
    go there with all the birds, and seek
    the mild breath of summer sky and trees still green.
    Everywhere winter has reached it's peak.
    See that all is fair and bright; a Florida winter you've seen.

    When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
