My Other Mother

On the day we first met, I could see...
that you weren't crazy about me.
You wondered if your son had a clue...
what he was getting himself into.

A divorcee with a child must have seemed...
A little wild and not exactly what you dreamed.
It must have been the icing on the cake...
When your son's name my daughter did take.

I knew from the very start...
that you were a woman with a generous heart.
I felt that in time we would be...
as close as a mother and daughter could be.

Over the decades, we've had our ups and downs...
I'm sure I was the cause of many frowns.
I'm writing this so you can see...
What a wonderful gift you gave to me.

A woman who raises a son alone should be praised...
I want you to know what a wonderful man you raised.
And if I could have chosen my other Mother...
I would not have chosen any other.

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
