(You Can't) Turn Back Time
Getting your heart broken sucks. It really does.
I don't think I could think of a worse feeling
Except maybe
Getting your heart broken twice.
I'm not complaining, trust me...
Like a friend of mine said:
"She's about the best first heartbreak you could wish for."
It's true, she is.
She's trying her hardest to
Disengage me from her,
And "be friends", and
I know she means it in the least cliché way,
But that doesn't stop it from hurting
A lot.
I know we'll stay in touch and
Continue to debate politics,
Like we did when we were more than friends.
We might even still say
'I love you' in letters and emails,
Sign our names with a kiss& hug,
But it will never be the same
As it once was.
I might finish that song,
One day
And send it to get
But it will be the past
Not the future.
We'll be remembering not living,
Because you can't live in the past.
We must think of tomorrow when
"We will run faster, stretch out our arms farther...
Boats against the current,
Borne back ceaselessly..."
We might get together and reminisce
About holding hands at the Farmers' Market,
Roller Derby, or
Risking one last kiss outside my parents' house.
We might laugh together about how incredibly
In love
We were
(And maybe still would be if not for circumstances
We had most definitely foreseen.)
I hope if that happens,
We are still the same two people with
The same two hearts
(Missing the same two pieces, we have held for each other)
And maybe, just maybe,
We could do it all over again,
(Minus the heartbreak.)
