    Poem Commentary

I wrote this as a response to "Because I Could Not Stop for Death" by Emily Dickinson. I read the work for the first time when I was 9 years old.

    Without Surprise

    Rock me beneath
    The sod---
    In my eternal bed---
    Black earth a grand
    Ceiling makes—
    Clod pillows
    For the head—

    Let me rest
    In concrete sleep
    Though my brethren rise—
    Affix their golden wings---
    Toward heaven,
    They surmise.

Excellent work Paolo! You make every word work... Some day, when I finally grow up (I'm only 60 now), I want to be able to write like you! I love that Dickinson poem "Because I Could Not Stop for Death". But this work brings to mind another poem as well: "Renascence" by Edna St. Vincent Milay

This work was inspired by that Dickinson poem. It was intended to carry her metaphor a bit farther and showcase how many Christians believe one thing but, perhaps, reality is something different. Such as many of the Christians I've met in the US who believe it is their right to judge.

Gee Whiz, Paolo.. If you take away their right to judge how can they prove their obvious superiority over us "sinners" out there? hehe

Wonderfully laced metaphors taking the reader into their destiny of eternal light, beyond, something, elsewhere, only, our infinite memory cannot place it. Lovely!

Dahlusion, it is always a wonderful thing to have someone read your work and grasp the essence of it. Thank you for reading it and sharing your thoughts of it. Paolo

Palo. I've comment on this elsewhere but must say I love the metaphorical ending on this poem. I didn't see it at first but it wears on you. It's like an undercut bank about to fall off. A poet friend// RH Peat

I should write about an undercut bank, it is a interesting image, I feel.

It's a good idea for sure. Go for it.

I have finally written one with an undercut bank in it. What do you think?

Poetry is what gets lost in translation.
