    Winter Truce

    WINTER TRUCE

    They stand,
    Silent sentinels on frozen ground.
    Cotton monuments to man’s determination,
Giant alters to a benevolent God.

    They stand,
Tarps blowing, buffeted by harsh winter winds
    That scream across the plains.
    Patiently awaiting the pallbearers.

    Deepening snow hides the scars.
Birds and rodents scavenge the fields.
Tractors, strippers, module makers at parade rest.
The truce is on, the war is over--
    ‘Til spring.
