    Why Are You Mad?

    Why are you mad?

    Sitting on your knees
    Tears plague your eyes
    Mumbling incoherently
    Your curse was said
Falling over the one you despised
Just as the flames grew over head

I broke a shoelace, followed by my foot
As you stayed in place inhaling the soot
I dropped my flute case, and fell flat in the mud
I went home, bathed, slipped, and swallowed the suds

In misery I lie, pondering the day
Blaming you it went the wrong way
Denying the truth that I know
Karma is my one and only real foe

I mocked you, passing by in the hall
    I tripped you, pushed you
When really, I never knew you at all

The loathing I made, the hate I spread
Is that why you wanted you and me dead?

Pity, it is! But please don't drag me down
Water filling my mouth as I realize, I'm going to drown
You sat and stood, obsorbing it all without much sound

What did you in was your own short comings
    So you can't blame me
It's not my fault your supposed strength was a lie
    You fell, I flew
    You died, I lived

    Wait!

    Dead are you?
    Was that all you had?
Sadly still, I don't know why you're mad.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
