When I Say I Love You

When I say I love you,
I mean it heart, mind, body, and soul,
I mean I'll never be untrue,
And I'll never let you go.

I mean if you are unhappy,
    If you don't smile,
    I too am dreary,
    Nothing seems worth while.

When you say I love you,
The most gentle words I could ever hope to hear,
I say I love you too,
And truly mean it my dear.

If you should ever say goodbye,
    Or walk out that door,
I wouldn't hide the despair in my eyes,
For when I say I love you I mean so much more.

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
