What I Wouldn't Do

What I Wouldn't Do

'Clean your room, for once in your life!'
I heard my mother yell.
But as I look at my chore ahead,
I thought of things I'd rather do instead.

I'd rather be stuck in a dead mans grave,
As they buried me with mud and grime,
I'd rather give up chocolate!
I'd rather give up rhyme!

I'd rather walk the plank,
Then do what I am told,
I'd rather face my mother,
But dare I say I'm not that bold!

I'd rather do all these things,
And many, many more,
But alas I hear her,
Pounding on my door.

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
