Child

Little child,
So sweet and innocent
You don’t know the world out there
And yet still you want to go see it
Explore it
Understand it
You’re so naïve and innocent
Why do you want to taint yourself?
Once you leave, you’ll never be the same
So stay here with me, child
Stay here and learn,
Stay here and live
Stay here and be innocent

Sweet child, how you’ve grown
Your beauty shines through so greatly
You’re prettier and prettier everyday
But, oh, how you’re so depressed
You wish to leave me
And never come back
You wish to go out there
You wish to ruin yourself
But I won’t let you

My dear child, you’re older and wiser now
No more a child
Now, you’re a woman
And now more then ever
Do you wish to leave me
But I won’t let you deary,
For you’re too precious to share
I shall keep you to myself
And never let you leave
Never…

My beautiful child, how you hate me so!
How could you!?
I gave you everything!
Everything!
What’s that?
I didn’t give you freedom?
But everything else was yours!
How could you hate me?!
I loved you!
And now…
Now you kill me…

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
