Transits
Bob Seger’s night is ominous
He races ere it closes in
But I have glory shine from space
Once the sky turns black as sin.
Oh, then let nightime’s gentle dark
Fall upon me as a shroud
Opening heaven’s gates to me
Privileges the sun has disallowed.
Let me watch the stars engage
In splendid race their vector fall
Make even moonglow blush the skies
Still held within that golden thrall.
Let silent haunting shadows pass
Flap their noiseless pinions slow
Owls must journey to their feasting
But I need nowhere now to go.
Summer skies cloy delivered warmth
And scarce let night chills cool my skin
But winter nightimes shuffle shivers
Twixt the Pleiades next of kin.
Nightime has but one dark mistress
Low, her breathing spills out fog
High she spites her jilted lover,
Occludes Orion and his dog.
Midnight promises bright rainbows
In distant gases flaming gifts
Escorted on by ogles when
Northern light’s green curtain lifts.
Starlit magic soothes my mood
When I am left awake to view
Their circumpolar transit made
Before dawn eclipses black with blue.
