TIRING DOWN IN TIME

TIRING DOWN IN TIME

Tiring down in time
Treads of tires beat the road
My stomach carries a bit of a load
And I am half way to getting old

This is the week I neglected my teeth
Too many forgotten objects and obligations
Flossing and mouthwash are the last things
on my mind

In the mirror a gouging bloody smile
Blood from between every pair of ivories
Working the thread my fingers
Paint my cheeks red

The death’s head smiles from somewhere inside me
Devouring my organs and replacing them with
A spirit of steel – they say
You become a shaman that way

My bloody teeth and devoured body
May then be medicine for infirmities
Of some lost animal spirit in the road
On the way to the other world

Thanks for the comment -- I can see how the imagery might grab someone who works in dentirstry, but your second point about the depression somehow how cut off. It's always nice to know someone is reading ...

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion.

T. S. Eliot (1888-1965) American-English poet and playwright.
