    THE PUSH

I guess I must of thought

    if I pushed hard enough

    you could make me walk

and I so wanted to run

if I could just make you see

then you would know what to do

    if anyone could fix me

it would have to be you

    not thinking for a moment

if you were up to the task

    consumed by my pain

    I forgot to ask

    eventually I pushed

you to the edge it seems

I saw you on the ledge

    but didn't hear your screams

    so now please forgive me

    for being so blind

for I see a distant image

    inside of my mind

of the person I long for

    that I used to be

    when I look at you

    is staring back at me

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
