Poem Commentary

when i was a little kid and i went to sleep at night if i was lying on my side and heard my pulse in my ear for some reason i thought that meant i would have a nightmare that night. i remembered this years later when i was 20something and decided to write about it

The Nightmare Drum

In a place all your own
in your home, in your fortress
The darkness consumes you
so terse with such shortness
In this scene by yourself
in this dream, in your Hell
Lies a secret, an answer
lies a keeper, praytell
So retreat to your haven
every night with your thoughts
Pray your sanctum will save you
when your keeper will not

Because somethin' in the night may come
when they're thumpin' on the nightmare drum
Yeah someone in the night may come
when you're bumpin' on the nightmare drum

Lie in wait at the gates
trust your conscience should guide you
Past the demons and snakes
who try to creep deep inside you
Keep them away, kept at bay
find your strength and stay grateful
As they slither to their space
to a place so distasteful
Where the person you know
becomes the voice you remember
While the memories you own
became the things you surrendered
So do away with your havoc
remain blissful instead
Just clean out your conscience
every night before bed

Because somethin' in the night may come
when they're thumpin' on the nightmare drum
Yeah someone in the night may come
when you're bumpin' on the nightmare drum

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
