Addiction

Ever take a step just to take ten steps back? Or play it safe on the sidewalk just to slip through the cracks? Ever try to take a leap but your feet won't leave the ground? It's like a yell out for help, in a world without sound. Like when you pour yourself some cereal, and find the milks run out. Like wanting to be sober, while you sit alone spun out. Ever try to climb a mountain? Ever dream to see the top? Ever wanna take that leap? Ever dream to feel that drop? It's like having to say thank you, for that gift you never wanted. Or the gift you never got to get cause St. Nick ain't responded. Like ice skates in the summer time, or sandals in the snow. A brand new pair of flipflops, when frostbite took your toes. Ever walk a mile? In someone else's shoes? Till athletes foot kept you up all night with an itch you couldn't soothe. Ever take your medicine? Just to end up feeling sicker? Or be the first in line to eat when the last guys get fed quicker. Like Murphy's Law in the Wild West, upheld with no enforcement. Or the hanging man on his invisible noose choked by lawful horsemen. Ever felt ironic? At a loss for words to say? Like a tie-dye shirt or a coloring book in a world that's only gray. And are you ever unsure of what you see when you stare into the mirror? It's like finally winning the golden medal...

in a world where silvers rarer.

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
