Shattered Dreams

Poem Commentary

The moment when you realise that your dream can't come true.

Shattered Dreams

Heart aches and chest burns
Head throbs and eyes burst
With tears of unfounded hope
Wasted on a dream long dead

Silence reigns as tongue twists
Into inaudible protest of denial
Unwilling to accept defeat
Yet words form no defense

It's the end, the finale
An unrealistic dream fueled by hope
Shouldered by love
Destroyed by indecision

Lest hope be restored
Lest dream be renewed
A feeble attempt to sustain
A broken heart, its shattered dream.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
